The All American Potion

Monday nights at 7 DJ Brother and DJ Wolfman set up the radio station just the way they like it. The DJs bring in their own lamp so they don’t have to use the bright studio lights and they hang up an American flag since their show is called The All American Potion. Unfortunately last Monday night when we went to film DJ Brother was running late and did not have time to grab his lamp or American flag to set the mood for their show.
The All American Potion plays a wide variety of music from classic rock to funk, Monday nights between 7 and 9 on WWLR 91.5. The show is hosted by roommates Adam Brothers (DJ Brother) and Ry Wolfel (DJ Wolfman). DJ Brother started the show in the spring of 2009 and has kept the show going with a few other DJs over the years. Recently he started hosting the radio show with Wolfel.
According to Brothers, after a long weekend when Monday comes around and no one is looking forward to school, the radio show is a great way to start off their week. He says its something to look forward to, usually people have the Monday morning blues but for Brothers and Wolfel they have the Monday night jams.
They always start their show with the national anthem since its called “The All American Potion”, sometimes they even sing along to show their patriotism. Around 8 the DJs play what they like to call “The Main Ingredient to the All American Potion”. For “The Main Ingredient” they usually play a longer song for about 15 minutes so they have time to use the bathroom or smoke a cigarette.
According to the Djs its pretty easy to get your own radio show, you just have to go to the WWLR club meetings at the beginning of the semester and talk to the board of directors or Nick Brien, the man in charge. WWLR wants more students to join the club so they are eager to give anyone a chance on the air.
Elias Hantzis, the radio traffic director, who was not their when we filmed, says his job is to make sure Brothers and Wolfel keep a record of the songs they play and the times they play them. “The basic rules are, treat the place better than your house, don’t leave it a mess, fill out the operation log and if you have any guests make sure they fill out the operation log as guest.” Hantzis says.
The rules are pretty simple: Be respectfull of the station, don’t swear on air, keep a record of who is in the studio and all the songs they play, and don’t play more than two songs by the same artist. The DJs don’t always agree with the two songs by one artist rule, they play what they want to hear.

Ryan Goes Fishing

View our video at:

Of the many outdoor activities Vermont is proud of is fishing.

There are many places and opportunities to fish in Vermont whether you chose to go to one of the giant lakes, or one of the thousands of tiny streams. There are always fish to be caught if one knows what they are doing.

However, nobody will get far without a fishing license. The state of Vermont requires that all people must have a legal fishing license in order to cast their line. If caught without a license by fish and wildlife, a sort of nature police, you can get stuck with hefty fines and lose your ability to obtain a permit for a number of years.

The repercussions of getting caught without a license may be steep, but getting one is not that hard. Pretty much any outdoors shop such as a gun shop, sports store, or town office supplies fishing licenses.  A few signatures, some paperwork and a small fee, somewhere between twenty and thirty dollars, and the license is yours.

Just because you have your license now does not mean you can go rid the world of all underwater life.

There are stipulations and regulations that apply and many times their specific to what body of water you are fishing in. For example one lake may be catch and release only, another may only be fishable during certain months of the year, another may have size limits to what you can keep.

There are over fourteen fishable species in Vermont including trout, bass, and pike.

Video Project Idea

For my group's Video Project we are going to go fishing! Ryan has an underwater case for a camera so hopefully we can get some cool underwater shots of the fish being reeled in. We are going to ask somebody at the sports shop where good fishing is and hopefully get some good audio for the video.

News 7 Writeup

Lyndon State College is unlike any other college because of its intense hands-on Television program. News 7 is based on campus and is organized and run by the students themselves. This station operates almost exactly like a real news organization, broadcasting a newsbreak at three o’clock that tells viewers what to expect for the later half hour news show from 5:30pm to 6 o’clock Monday through Friday. There are many different aspects to working in the newsroom from reporters, field camera operators, anchors, a director, producer, and a team of behind the scenes students who help broadcast the show. Everyday reporters and cameramen/women find and go out on their own stories and leads that then get put on the evening broadcast either that very night or the following night. Once back they edit their footage and add voice-overs. After that the next step is setting up the newsroom.
In the hour before the show the newsroom becomes frantic. Technical difficulties, timing issues, and conflicts all arise and must be fixed by the 5:30 deadline because ‘the show must go on.’ Besides all the stories being loaded into the data base and the ‘rundown’, basically the playbill, being rearranged there are a number of jobs that students occupy that are all essential for the show to run. ‘Behind the scenes’ jobs include audio, who sets the levels and brings the sound in and out during the show, ‘Playback’ who loads each video and plays it at the correct time, and the two camera operators who frame up each shot and move around the studio during the show. Each job is equally important and without one of them the show could not happen.
News 7 covers the surrounding towns of the Northeast Kingdom and has an impact of the people who tune in. As a rule of thumb the stories we cover cannot be about Lyndon State itself unless it has a big enough impact on the greater community. This is because the majority of the statistical population that watches the broadcast is the elderly non-college community. We cater to stories that affect their lives such as town meetings in other towns that may result in changes that they may not have heard about otherwise. Anyone who watches the show can critique what they have seen online, and many people do. Lyndon State has received many awards due to our television program.
About 90% of students who graduate from Lyndon State College through the Television program get jobs right out of college, many of which are spread out throughout the United States.

News 7 Podcast Synopsis

For my group’s second slideshow, were going to make a presentation about what goes on during a day at news 7. My idea is to get pictures of things going on throughout the day and put them in a sequence from the start of the day to the end of the show. For instance maybe start with pictures of photographers setting up a camera when they first get to the news station or reporters making phone calls and looking for a story. Next film the photographer and reporter out on the story or coming back from a story. Then show them editing the video and writing the story to the point where its ready to air. Next take pictures of the staff rushing around at 5 o'clock getting ready for the show and making sure everything is set up right. We can film the sophomore practicum students setting up cameras and audio along with any other jobs taking place right before 5:30. Then film what goes on backstage in the control room during the show. We could end with pictures of the after-show group meeting in the newsroom or the rush of students leaving at the end of the day.

CBS Atlanta: Internet Output

CBS Atlanta's facebook page seemed to only be filled with posts about the TV shows that were going to air in the next week, nothing actually news worthy. ex: When Danny is put on the stand to be questioned, things get heated between the brother and sister on an all-new BLUE BLOODS tonight, 10/9c! Sneak Peek:
Also I found that every post has a video included, there are no plain text updates or stories.. so even if you wanted to know what happened faster you couldn't you would have to watch the whole video to find out.

cbsatlanta.com functions as an actual place to find out news in the world. There is no mention of what popular shows are on television this week. Instead I found stories about local schools in Atlanta and weather pertaining to the area. So if you are wondering what who Susie cheated on Brian with then go to the facebook page but if you wanted to know about the real world go to the actual website.

Intramural Floor Hockey at LSC

The LSCIHL aka the Lyndon State College Intramural Hockey League. For many people they have never had the chance to play the game of hockey on a organized team, the LSCIHL gives people just that chance to play.
The league consists of only allowing 4 experienced hockey players with high school hockey background or higher. The rest of the players must be people who have not had any prior hockey experience or background. This adds a competitive spirit to the league. The players who have experience must play with players that are new to the game. And the new players must adapt quikcly.
We notice the experienced hockey players act as leaders and help teach their newly adapting teammates to the game. The new players learn fast and quickly become competitors amongst other pers. To many, league seems very balance of how the teams are set up and its fun watching a bunch of people just having fun.
We attended one of the floor hockey games to see the final outcome between two powerhouse teams,ROOOF(Red/White/Blue) vs teamWhale Pack (Green /Blue) face-off against eachother last Tuesday night.
Rooof started off with a bang scoring two goals in the first period. Rooof scored their third unanswered goal early in the second, but than the Whale pack answered back with two quick goals to bring the score within one. But than Rooof desided to score twice more, than the Whale pack was able to slip one more goal by before the end of the second.
With a score 5-3 going into the third, after some arguments of officating and calls, both teams were unable to score as Rooof once again remains the most undefeated team in regular seasons in LSCIHL History.
What is it that keeps players so interested and so motivated to play a game of street hockey?  Some people believe that it is the level of competiton amoungst the teams. Some players are just trying something new and challenging, and most players are just trying to have fun.
A lot of the teams in the LSCIHL are a group of friends that all share one thing in common, the love for the game of hockey. During the game confrontations may occur, but once the buzzer sounds everyone shows sportsmanship by shaking hands, laughing and congradulating eachother about the game, and egar to play eachother once again every next Tuesday or Sunday night.

Podcast Synopsis

The LSCIHL aka the Lyndon State College Intramural Hockey League. I plan on interviewing Uriah Brahmas who is handling the scheduling for the league, and perhaps Mike Desmond the new floor hockey manger. Also I may catch a few players on their way out after a game and ask why they are so interested in the new floor hockey league. For many people they have never had the chance to play the game of hockey on a organized team, the LSCIHL gives people just that chance to play. The league consists of only allowing 4 Experienced hockey players with High school Hockey background or high. The rest of the players must be people who have not had any hockey background. This adds a competitive spirit to the league. The players who have experience must play with players that are new to the game. We notice the experienced hockey players act as leaders and help teach their newly adapting teammates to the game. The new players learn fast and quickly become competitors amongst other pers. I would say the league seems very balance of how the teams are set up and its fun watching a bunch of people just having fun. Most of the teams have all formed because of friendships. Friends come together to sweat and sacrifice just for the title of a Intramurals Semester Championship.

Podcast Write-Up

Shaking the sleep out of my eyes and struggling to regain my consciousness I stumble to my feet, as I do most late Saturday mornings, and stagger over to my window. Grass. Dirt. No fresh snow today, looks like it will be another mediocre day at the mountain. Despite the lack of snow we have received this year we still make the trip to the mountain to ski or ride on what the mountain has to offer out of the love of the sport. However it is done with a certain lack of enthusiasm that is felt by all who enjoy the snow sports for there is nothing quite like riding that new powder snow that only results from fresh snowfall.
This winter season seems to be especially low on snowfall compared to previous years. “Vermont is two feet under average for snow accumulation this year” Holmes remarks at the beginning of the podcast. While this may seem like a blessing to those who hate shoveling their driveways and cleaning off their cars, it can spell a death sentence to ski mountains.  Although every mountain has the potential to make man-made snow, it is a difficult and time-consuming process. Mountains must operate the guns all night long and smooth out the great piles they create, meaning that more staff is required to get the mountain up and running, and in the end it doesn’t compare to the quality of natural snow. Some of the mountain is not even open because of the lack of snow and making snow is simply too big a task.  Another negative side effect of this awkward weather is that warm temperatures during the day melt the snow and colder temperatures at night refreeze this melted water into sheets of ice, which are not fun for anyone.
What this means to skiers and snowboarders is that conditions have not been as good this year as other years and the inner drive to make that trip to the mountain falls from the top of their goals. We spoke with Kyle Gould, a ski instructor at Burke Mountain, about this seasons lack of snow and the effect it has had at burke. He makes a good point about how people who like to ski in the woods cannot this year for the most part because of the low coverage compared to last years four feet. But the lack of snow is not only affecting which trails are open or how deep the glades are. The terrain park also suffers. With little fresh snow, the take-offs and landings to the jumps and features become solid sheets of ice making the park dangerous. What may have been fairly easy before has now become far different and could easily result in injury.
For now there is no explanation for our spring-like summer, but some speculations include global warming, a freak occurrence, or maybe it just rained too much during the summer.

Slideshows and Galleries

This is a photo gallery I found on flickr. It is a small gallery about people sleeping in libraries. I found it humorous because in most of the pictures it looks like they fell asleep by accident in the middle of a hardcore study session. I can relate to some of these pictures, staying up late, struggling to stay awake the night before a big exam of project.

B&B Scuba is a Scuba diving group in Maui. This slide show is a good way for customers to decide if they wish to take the trip to Maui and or give their business to this scuba company. The potential diver can watch the slide show and see what kinds of areas they will be diving and either get excited about the trip or decide that it might no t be for them. It is a good way to attract customers because the pictures show beautiful coral reefs and the divers exploring sunken ship.

I found a slideshow with audio about how one man made an Optimus Prime costume for his kid. Pictures show the steps he took while making the costume. He explains as the pictures keep progressing what materials he used, where he got them, and how he went about putting it together. His narration contributes a lot to the slideshow.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1s1HHFrEXuI

A lot of slideshows I found had a song or music playing as the pictures progressed and although it added a nice mood to the pictures it did not add much else. With this in mind I wanted to critique a slideshow that had narration of what was going on in the pictures. This was the most effective form of audio I found and was the most informative of all the galleries and slideshows I viewed.

Epic mealtime

Epic Mealtime is a video podcast cooking show. I know what your thinking this kid likes boring cooking shows? No, this is no ordinary cooking show. A group of guy friends get together and make the most intense man-meals, filled with all the cliché food types men like. Bacon, piles of meats, cheese, burgers, cheese, meat, bacon... you get the point. and that pretty much their cooking style. One podcast I watched they made a meat pie. They must have had five individual layers of bacon weaved together like a basket throughout the other layers of the pie. I liked this podcast because it wasn't just another boring cooking show like on the foodnetwork channel. The cast goes through the steps fast and are excited about what they are cooking thus keeping my interest, or maybe it was the homemade Jack Daniels maple syrup.

The Onion

The Onion is a mock news organization that focuses on comedy. They imitate real news environments and shows so well that the first time I saw it I didn't know it was fake. The whole time the reporters keep a straight face and talk in a completely news-professional tone all while reading hilarious news stories. One of the podcasts I watched was making fun of Tom Brady after the patriots lost the Superbowl, and the other was a mock news piece about a teen who went brain dead. The teen was reported to only be able to "roll her eyes and text." You won't learn any real facts while watching The Onion but it is sure to make you laugh. Also this could make for a good joke if you find the right story. In a print version of one of their stories I read a while back, they claimed that dove soap was made with real doves!

How Stuff Works: Stuff You Should Know

These audio podcasts are from two guys who talk about various interesting topics. Some topics include 'How Mexican Wrestling Works' and 'What's the Deal with the Bermuda Triangle.' I found that while I thought these were going to be interesting to listen to, the two guys just conversed in monotone dialogue that I found boring. They did not have actual facts about the Bermuda Triangle but instead I found them saying things like "I believe this happened..." or "didn't that plane disappear..." It was hard to keep my concentration focused on the podcast. Often their dialogue was off topic, discussing things unrelated to the topic of the podcast. This was my least favorite, not because of the topics at hand, just the way in which they were executed.

Sunoco Turns Loco!

The Hometown Sunoco gas station in Swanton, Vermont was robbed early yesterday morning.

At 1:15 AM the clerk found him self at gunpoint by an armed assailant. The robber was a 5'8'' - 6'00'' white male.

The assailant got away on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. Luckily no one was injured.

The manhunt is underway and Vermont State Police welcome all leads. If you or anyone you know has any information please call Vermont State Police in Saint Albans - (802) 524-5993 or Franklin County Sheriff's Office - (802)-524-2121

Friend or Foe?

October 20,2011 was not fun for Wayne Goff.

Wayne Goff and his fellow hunter Conrad Masse were out in the woods of Albany, VT tracking a bear with their two hounds. They took their truck up the road to a spot where they suspected the bear would cross and go out and waited.

They were about 500 feet apart from each other when the bear came out of the woods between the two men!

Masse opened fire, shooting at least three shots, but only one actually hit the bear. One of the shots hit a nearby tree, and the other dug into Goff in the midsection/pelvic area!

Goff was transported to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and is now released and in stable condition. Masse however is not out of the woods yet.

He is being charged with aggravated assault for shooting Goff. Also if that wasn't the least of his worries he was issued fish and game tickets for shooting from the road, having a loaded rifle in a vehicle, and not having proper display of permits for the bear hounds.

Masse will appear in court on February 28, 2012.

I chose to critique MTV's Blog I found through technorati.com. This blog is very well done. There are many links to different sites, including concert schedules, show times for television, news, and upcoming movies. This blog is also very visually appealing because it is bright and has lots of pictures and videos to go with the posts. One thing I dislike about some blogs I found was long posts. Multiple paragraphs that just drone on and on. MTV's blog however have fairly smaller posts that I could read way faster and not get bored.
